About Myrmica schencki Viereck, 1903
Myrmica schencki Viereck, 1903 is a species of ant belonging to the genus Myrmica. This species has a wide distribution that covers Europe, ranging from Great Britain, Sweden, and Finland in the north to Spain, Italy, and the Balkans in the south. It is also found in the Caucasus, Turkey, West Siberia, Kazakhstan, the Tien-Shan and Altai Mountains, and near Krasnoyarsk in East Siberia. It lives in dry habitats located in open areas and forests. Its nests are typically built in the ground, and are occasionally constructed in grass or moss tussocks. Colonies of this ant are polygynous, and can contain up to 1000 workers. Recent research has found that this species may feed partially on pollen, which is a rarely documented feeding behavior among ants.
