This butterfly can be found in Senegal, the Gambia, Mali, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, the Republic of the Congo, Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Ethiopia, western Kenya, Tanzania and north-western Zambia. Its natural habitat includes forests (such as pre-forest and riparian forest), dense savanna, farmland edges, woodland and marshy areas. The larvae of Bicyclus vulgaris feed on plant species from the grass family Poaceae.
