Munroa squarrosa (Nutt.) Torr. is an annual bunchgrass. It produces a stem with many branches that form a tangled mat no wider than 20 centimeters. Its short, narrow, spiky leaves are 1 to 2 centimeters long, with edges lined with hairs. The inflorescence is short, and sometimes grows within a crowded cluster of leaves near the stem tips. Its hairy spikelets measure just under one centimeter in length.
