About Mulsantina picta (Randall, 1838)
Mulsantina picta is a small ladybug species. Individuals typically measure 3.3โ5.3 millimetres (0.13โ0.21 in) in length, and 2.2โ4.0 millimetres (0.087โ0.157 in) in width. The markings on its elytra are quite variable, and may sometimes be entirely absent. The markings on its pronotum are more consistent and easier to recognize. This species is widespread across the United States and southern Canada. It is especially associated with pine forests, and acts as a predator of aphids and adelgids. As a conifer specialist, it is a rather dominant species in habitats of older pine trees, which are known to have low aphid densities.
