About Muhlenbergia lindheimeri Hitchc.
Muhlenbergia lindheimeri is a species of bunch grass, commonly known as big muhly, blue muhly, and Lindheimer's muhly. It grows 3 to 6 feet (up to 1.5 meters) tall. This species is native to North America, where it occurs in northern Mexico and as far north as the Edwards Plateau region of Texas. It is also cultivated as an ornamental grass. It can be used as a green screen alternative to pampas grass, for erosion control, for water retention, and as nest material for many species of birds. This perennial grass forms clumps of erect stems. Its ligule can reach up to 3.5 centimeters in length. The leaves grow up to 55 centimeters long, and are either flat or folded. The inflorescence is a panicle up to 50 centimeters long, often purplish in color, with grayish spikelets. This grass provides grazing for cattle and horses, but it is not one of the more palatable grasses, as it has a wiry texture. In the wild, this grass grows in calcareous soils. Ornamental cultivars of this species include 'Autumn Glow'.
