The chestnut-bellied rock thrush, formally Monticola rufiventris (Jardine & Selby, 1833), has a total body length of 21 to 23 centimeters (8.3 to 9.1 inches) and weighs between 48 and 61 grams (1.7 to 2.2 ounces). Adult males have blue-grey coloring on the crown and upperparts, with darker lores and throat, and deep chestnut undersides. Adult females have dull grey-brown upperparts, with underparts that are scalloped slate-grey marked with buffy-white. The eyering and post-auricular patch of females are whitish-buff.
