It is distributed across Angola, Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical dry shrubland. Bird populations found in the eastern portion of this species' range are sometimes classified as a separate species: the Pretoria rock thrush, also called the Transvaal rock thrush, with the scientific name M. pretoriae.
