Montia calycina (Colenso) Pax & K.Hoffm. is a mat-forming herb. It produces very thin, green leaves. Its low-growing inflorescences are typically orange and yellow, and may sometimes be pink. This species occurs on both the North Island and South Island of New Zealand. It is primarily an alpine species specialized to grow in scree fields, and can also grow in scrub and tussock fields dominated by Macrolearia colensoi. It has also been recorded in lowland habitats, including the Manawatu area near Kapiti.
