About Monstera dubia (Kunth) Engl. & K.Krause
Monstera dubia, with the full scientific name Monstera dubia (Kunth) Engl. & K.Krause, is a plant species belonging to the genus Monstera. It is native to Central and South America. This species is well known for the dramatic change its foliage goes through as it grows. It starts at the seed stage on the forest floor, then produces strongly patterned leaves that grow flat against and climb closely up a host tree trunk or other surface in a shingling growth habit. Eventually, it develops mature leaves that have fenestrations similar to the leaves of Monstera deliciosa. This distinct change between young and mature leaf forms is an example of leaf dimorphism. The specific epithet "dubia" means dubious. The name was chosen because early authors were not certain that this species actually belonged to the dicot genus Marcgravia, where it was originally classified.
