Monardella douglasii Benth. is a hairy annual herb. It produces a branching purple stem that grows up to around 30 centimeters tall. Its leaves are arranged oppositely and vary in shape. The inflorescence forms a head holding several flowers, which blooms from within a cup of translucent bracts that have green and purple veins. The purple flowers measure just over one centimeter long.

Monardella douglasii is endemic to northern California. It is found in several areas of the Inner Southern California Coast Ranges, including the Diablo Range, and in the nearby valleys of the southern San Francisco Bay Area. This plant grows in many different habitat types, including grassland, chaparral, foothill oak woodland, and rocky serpentine slopes.
