About Monardella australis Abrams

Monardella australis is a perennial herb that grows in small tufts and produces long, sometimes erect flowering stems. Its leaves are pale green or grayish, oval or lance-shaped, and often toothed. The inflorescence is a head holding several flowers that bloom within a cup of pinkish green bracts. Each flower is pinkish in color and grows up to 2 centimeters long. This plant is endemic to southern California, located within the Greater Los Angeles Area. It is only known from populations in the San Gabriel Mountains and San Bernardino Mountains of the eastern Transverse Ranges, and the adjacent San Jacinto Mountains of the Peninsular Ranges. It grows in red fir forest and yellow pine forest habitats on the higher slopes of these ranges.
