About Mocis frugalis (Fabricius, 1775)
Mocis frugalis (Fabricius, 1775) has a wingspan of 36–50 millimetres (1.4–2.0 in). Males have hind tibias and tarsi covered with long thick pile. Individuals have a grey-brown body. The forewing features a diffused dark mark above the center of vein 1; an oblique postmedial line that is pale on the inner side and red brown on the outer side; and a submarginal series of black specks. Some specimens have a black spot above the inner margin of the forewing before the middle. The hindwing has postmedial and diffused submarginal lines. The larva is pale yellowish ochreous, marked with darker lines. It has two subdorsal lines, plus a sublateral series of olivaceous spots. The 4th and 5th somites are edged with black on their rear side. Known food plants of this species include species from the Zingiberaceae family, as well as Andropogon, Eleusine, Oryza, Panicum, Paspalum, Saccharum, Sorghum, Zea, Typhonium, Cyperus, Glycine, Medicago, and Vigna. Eggs are darkish green, with blotches of dark purple.
