Nomenclature and Taxonomy
Micrurus diastema, commonly called the variable coral snake, is a venomous snake species belonging to the family Elapidae. This species is endemic to southeastern Mexico and northern Central America, and seven subspecies are currently recognized.
Habitat and Elevation Range
It can be found in tropical wet, moist, and dry forests at elevations ranging from near sea level up to 1,250 m (4,100 ft), across Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras.
Reproductive Mode
M. diastema reproduces via egg-laying, meaning it is oviparous.
