Microcebus rufus (Lesson, 1840)

Scientific Nomenclature

The brown mouse lemur, scientifically named Microcebus rufus (Lesson, 1840), is a small primate. It has several other common names: rufous mouse lemur, eastern rufous mouse lemur, red mouse lemur, and russet mouse lemur.

Distribution

Like all other mouse lemurs, this species is found only on the island of Madagascar, specifically in rainforests of eastern Madagascar.

Coloration

Its dorsal (back) side is brown or reddish-brown, while its ventral (belly) side is whitish-grey.

Lifespan

Mouse lemurs are among the shortest-lived primates. The brown mouse lemur lives 6 to 8 years in the wild, and has an average lifespan of 12 years when kept under human care.

Activity Pattern

This lemur is a solitary, nocturnal animal.

Nesting Habits

It typically lives in tree holes and leaf-built nests, and will occasionally use abandoned bird nests. It builds its nests in relatively large groups that consist of immature young and adult females.
