Each stem bears 2 or 3 leaves located at or very near its base. The leaves have tender, shallowly grooved sheaths that are rounded on the back, with ligules measuring 0.2–1 mm long. Their leaf blades are either flat or enrolled, 1–5 cm long, up to 0.5 mm wide, and end in a stump tip.
