About Mesoligia furuncula (Denis & Schiffermüller), 1775

This species, Mesoligia furuncula, has a wingspan of 22–28 mm, and forewings that measure 10–12 mm in length. In its typical form, the forewing has a sharp demarcation between a pale distal field and a rufous (reddish-brown) basal field. Its colour and pattern are highly variable, and it can resemble many species in the genus Oligia. It can only be separated from all of these species except Mesoligia literosa by examining details of the genitalia. A study of genitalia from European and Asian specimens of the two closely related species Mesoligia literosa and Mesoligia furuncula found that there is no significant intra-specific variation within either species.
