About Menegazzia subsimilis (H.Magn.) R.Sant.
Menegazzia subsimilis (H.Magn.) R.Sant. is a species of lichen belonging to the family Parmeliaceae. It occurs in scattered locations across the globe: its known distribution includes Oceania (Hawaii, Solomon Islands), Asia (Japan, Papua New Guinea, Russia), Europe (Austria, Germany, Portugal), South America (Ecuador, Peru), the Caribbean (Dominican Republic, Jamaica), and North America (Canada, USA). It was first recorded as new to several regions in recent decades: the first records are from Tibet in 2005, the British Isles, and Malaysia and Indonesia in 2007. The species was originally described in 1941 by Swedish lichenologist Adolf Hugo Magnusson under the name Parmelia subsimilis, based on specimens collected in Hawaii. One year after this original description, in 1942, Rolf Santesson moved the species to the genus Menegazzia. No specimens of the species were reported outside Hawaii until a 1993 collection from southeast Asia.
