About Melopyrrha portoricensis (Daudin, 1800)

The Puerto Rican bullfinch (scientific name Melopyrrha portoricensis (Daudin, 1800)) has black feathers, with distinct orange markings above the eyes, around the throat, and at the base under the tail. This species measures between 17 to 19 cm (6.7 to 7.5 inches) in length, and weighs approximately 32 grams (1.1 ounces). This bullfinch is most commonly found in dense mountain forests, but it also occurs in lower elevation forests with dense undergrowth, coffee plantations, thick brushy areas, and dry coastal thickets, and only rarely lives in mangroves. It has also been classified as an edge or open-canopy species. While it has a widespread distribution across Puerto Rico, its range and total population are both suspected to have declined.
