It is part of the tanager family Thraupidae and falls within the subfamily Coerebinae — a group that also includes Darwin's finches. This species is endemic and found exclusively in Cuba. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical or tropical moist montane forest, and heavily degraded former forest. The International Union for Conservation of Nature categorizes the Cuban bullfinch as a near threatened species due to its vulnerable conservation status.
