Melica macra Nees is a bisexual species that has closed leaf sheaths, short rhizomes, and culms that grow 20โ€“100 centimetres (7.9โ€“39.4 in) tall. Its panicle is 10โ€“15 centimetres (3.9โ€“5.9 in) long and linear in shape. The rachis and branches are scabrous, while the 0.2โ€“0.3 millimetre (0.0079โ€“0.0118 in) long ligule is membranous. Its glumes are lanceolate, papery, and have membranous borders, and the lower and upper glumes differ in size. The lower glume is 5.5โ€“10 millimetres (0.22โ€“0.39 in) long by 2.5โ€“3.5 millimetres (0.098โ€“0.138 in) wide, while the upper glume is 6.5โ€“10 millimetres (0.26โ€“0.39 in) long by 2โ€“3 millimetres (0.079โ€“0.118 in) wide. This species is distributed in Argentina, where it occurs in the provinces of Buenos Aires, Catamarca, Corrientes, Entre Rios, Formosa, La Pampa, Misiones, Santiago del Estero, Tucumรกn, San Luis, and Santa Fe.
