About Melese laodamia Druce, 1884

Melese laodamia is a moth species that belongs to the family Erebidae. It was first described by Herbert Druce in 1884. Its known distribution covers Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, and Trinidad. This moth appeared in the official insignia of the RAF 360 Squadron, a Royal Air Force unit tasked with developing equipment and tactics to jam enemy radars during the Cold War. The choice of this moth was inspired by the observation that Melese laodamia produces ultrasound when it is handled. This produced ultrasound was originally thought to jam the sonar of insectivorous bats.
