About Melanoplus islandicus Blatchley, 1898
Melanoplus islandicus Blatchley, 1898, generally known by the common name island short-wing grasshopper, is a species of spur-throated grasshopper in the family Acrididae. Additional common names for this species include forest locust and island locust. This species is found in North America, primarily in the coastal regions of Alaska and Canada. It is considered a species of concern, as its populations have declined over time due to multiple factors including habitat loss and the introduction of invasive species. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect and preserve this species, also referred to as the Isle Royale grasshopper. In 2003, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service proposed listing this species under the Endangered Species Act, though it has not yet been granted listed status. Current protection work focuses on controlling populations of non-native species in the species' habitat and restoring damaged habitats.
