Melanoplus angustipennis was first formally described by Dodge in 1877. This species is a member of the spur-throated grasshopper group, belonging to the family Acrididae. Its most widely used common name is narrow-winged spur-throat grasshopper. It also has two other widely recognized common names: narrow-winged sand grasshopper and narrow-winged locust. This grasshopper species is found in North America.
