About Melanophyllum haematospermum (Bull.) Kreisel
The cap of Melanophyllum haematospermum measures 1โ3 centimeters in diameter. It begins as an obtusely conical shape before developing into a convex shape, and it is sometimes umbonate. Its cap can be colored beige, grayish-brown, or tan. The stipe is 2โ5.5 centimeters long and 0.2โ0.4 centimeters wide. This species has red gills. Despite its common name, the spore print is olive-green, and is reportedly bluish green when the mushroom is fresh. Melanophyllum haematospermum grows in humus-rich soil under trees, and often occurs in disturbed areas. It has been found near roads, in gardens, in compost piles, and in greenhouses. It is rare in the Pacific Northwest, and produces fruit bodies during late summer and autumn.
