This species is scientifically named Melanodera xanthogramma (Gould & G.R.Gray, 1839). Adult males are primarily yellow and grey, with distinct black markings around the face and neck. Females and juvenile individuals have mottled, slightly yellowish grey plumage. The species' natural habitat is high-altitude grassland, ranging from the northern tropical zone southward to the sub-Antarctic region that includes Tierra del Fuego and Cape Horn.
