About Megathymus yuccae (Boisduval & Le Conte, 1833)

Megathymus yuccae (Boisduval & Le Conte, 1833) has brown upper wing surfaces, with yellow spots present on its forewings. The underside of its wings is mostly mottled with black and gray. This species has a wingspan ranging from 48 to 79 mm (1.9 to 3.1 inches). Caterpillars of Megathymus yuccae feed on various Yucca species, including Y. filamentosa, Y. smalliana, Y. gloriosa, Y. elata, Y. arizonica, and Y. aloifolia. While adult Megathymus yuccae do not feed, males will gather moisture from mud. This butterfly can be found in deserts, foothills, and woodlands where yucca plants grow, as yucca plants are the site where this species lays its eggs.
