Medicago arborea L. is a shrub that grows 1 to 4 meters (3 feet 3 inches to 13 feet 1 inch) tall and wide, with an overall pale yellow color. Its stems are erect and terete, and its triangular stipules measure 5 to 8 millimeters (0.20 to 0.31 inches) in height. Petioles are 2 to 4 centimeters (0.79 to 1.57 inches) long, and bear leaflets that range in shape from obovate to obcordate. Flowers are arranged in loose racemes of 6 to 10 flowers, with the racemes measuring 2 to 2.5 centimeters (0.79 to 0.98 inches) long. The racemes are borne on axillar peduncles that are 3 to 5 centimeters (1.2 to 2.0 inches) long. The orange corolla measures 12 to 15 millimeters (0.47 to 0.59 inches) across. Bracts are 2 millimeters (0.079 inches) long, and pedicels are 5 millimeters (0.20 inches) long. Its legume fruit is coiled into 0.5 to 1.5 spirals, measures 12 to 15 millimeters (0.47 to 0.59 inches) wide, and is pubescent at its center. The seeds are 4 millimeters (0.16 inches) long.
