About Matucana haynii (Otto ex Salm-Dyck) Britton & Rose
Matucana haynii grows either solitary or in clusters of sprouts, with spherical to broadly cylindrical green shoots. It reaches up to 30 cm (12 in) in height and 20 cm (7.9 in) in diameter. This cactus has 14 to 30 tuberculate ribs. Its spines are variable in color from white to light brown, and turn gray as the plant ages. There are 1 to 20 central spines that measure 1 to 7 cm (0.39 to 2.76 in) long, and 14 to 45 radial spines that measure 0.8 to 4 cm (0.31 to 1.57 in) long. Its mostly crooked flowers range in color from crimson to salmon pink, sometimes with faint crimson tones. The flowers are 4 to 9 cm (1.6 to 3.5 in) long and reach up to 4 cm (1.6 in) in diameter. The fruits are spherical to club-shaped, reddish green, 1 to 1.5 cm (0.39 to 0.59 in) long, and have the same diameter as their length. Matucana haynii is widespread in Peru, growing from the La Libertad region to the Arequipa region on the western slope of the Andes, at altitudes between 1500 and 4100 meters.
