About Marpesia zerynthia Hübner, 1823

Marpesia zerynthia, commonly called the waiter, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Nymphalidae. Its overall distribution is restricted to the Neotropical realm. While it is primarily found in Mesoamerica, it can also be observed in regions located slightly to the north and south of Mesoamerica. This species is confirmed to occur in the South American countries of Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, and northern Brazil. In Mesoamerica, its range extends to central Mexico. Rare vagrant individuals have been recorded as far north as Texas, United States. This species lives in tropical deciduous forests and tropical evergreen forests, and may also be found in open areas. It can be found at altitudes up to 2,400 m. As it is generally classified as a cloud-forest species, it is most common at altitudes between approximately 800 m to 1,800 m.
