About Mangina argus (Kollar, 1844)

Adults of Mangina argus have pinkish or brownish-red heads, thoraxes, and forewings. The collar has two black spots with yellow rings; two such spots are present on the tegula, and three are present on the thorax. The collar is outlined in bright scarlet. The abdomen is scarlet, with black spots arranged in a dorsal series, a ventral series, and two paired lateral series. The forewing has six transverse series of black spots that each have yellow rings; each series is curved, irregularly placed, and variable in spot size and number, with the postmedial series splitting into two branches towards the costa. Hindwings are also scarlet, with one black spot at the end of the cell, one at the origin of vein 2, one at the middle of vein 2, and a black submarginal series of spots. There are also a few small black spots on the margin, and all of these black spots are somewhat variable in appearance. The larva is purple-black with a small number of dorsal hairs. The head and a lateral line running from the 4th to 10th body somites are reddish. It has a dorsal series of transverse white streaks.
