About Mandevilla laxa (Ruiz & Pav.) Woodson
Mandevilla laxa, commonly known as Chilean jasmine, is an ornamental plant in the genus Mandevilla of the Apocynaceae family. It is native to southern Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and northern Argentina. It grows as a deciduous vine in cool climates, and can reach 6 meters (20 feet) in height. In summer, it produces large clusters of strongly scented white flowers. Because it is not fully hardy and cannot survive freezing temperatures, it must be grown under glass protection in an unheated greenhouse or conservatory with full sunlight in temperate regions. In the United Kingdom, this species has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Despite its common name Chilean jasmine, the species is not a true jasmine belonging to the genus Jasminum.
