About Malva trimestris (L.) Salisb.
Malva trimestris (L.) Salisb. has accepted scientific synonyms Althaea trimestris and Lavatera trimestris. Its common names include annual mallow, rose mallow, royal mallow, regal mallow, and common annual tree mallow. This flowering plant species is native to the Mediterranean region. It is an annual that grows up to 120 cm (47 in) tall and reaches 45 cm (18 in) wide. In summer, it produces shallow funnel-shaped flowers in shades of white and pink, which have maroon centers and maroon veining on the petals. The species epithet trimestris is Latin that literally means "of three months", referring to the plant's growing and flowering period. This plant is widely cultivated, often grown under the older name Lavatera trimestris. Numerous cultivars have been developed for garden use; all of these cultivars are annuals that are sown in spring to flower in the same year. The cultivars 'Beauty Series' and 'Silver Cup' have earned the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
