About Malus orientalis Uglitzk.
Malus orientalis, commonly known as the eastern crabapple or Caucasus apple, is a species of flowering plant belonging to the Rosaceae family. Its native range covers Bulgaria, Turkey (including East Thrace), the Caucasus region, Iran, and Afghanistan. It produces relatively large yellow fruit that has been used as food by humans for thousands of years; a string of halved, dried Malus orientalis fruit was even discovered in a royal tomb at Ur. Drying the fruit, then rehydrating it by boiling, reduces its tart flavor. Malus orientalis contributed to the genetic pool of domesticated apples, alongside two other Malus species: M. sieversii and M. sylvestris.
