About Malacothrix californica DC.

Malacothrix californica DC. is an annual herb that grows a flowering stem reaching up to approximately 45 centimeters in height. Its linear to lance-shaped, pinnately lobed leaves are mostly found clustered around the base of the plant, and the leaf lobes are typically threadlike to linear in shape. The inflorescence consists of a single flower head lined with phyllaries that have hairy bases. These phyllaries usually number 20 to 26 or more, arranged in 2 to 3 or more series. Each phyllary often has a red stripe running down its midsection. The entire flower head measures 16–20 millimeters (0.6–0.8 inches) across, and holds rings of ray florets that are usually yellow to pale yellow, though they may sometimes be white.
