About Maianthemum canadense Desf.

Maianthemum canadense Desf. is a species that reaches 10–25 cm (4–10 in) in height, growing from branching rhizomes that produce roots only at their nodes. Individual plants can be single-leaved and sterile, meaning they lack any fruiting structures. Fertile, flowering shoots of this species produce 2–3 leaves. This species is distributed across Canada, ranging from southeastern Yukon and southern Northwest Territories east through eastern British Columbia to Newfoundland and Labrador, and it also occurs in St. Pierre and Miquelon. In the United States, it grows across the northern region from the Dakotas eastward, and extends south along the Appalachian Mountains. Disjunct populations exist in Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska and Kansas, and the species is possibly extirpated from Montana. Maianthemum canadense Desf. is primarily a boreal forest understory species, and can also be found at low elevation sites in the Rocky Mountains up to 1800 m. It is most commonly associated with moist woods, but can also be found growing in northern sandy pine woods, and can persist in clearings.
