This species is currently classified as Mahonia wilcoxii (Kearney) Rehder, and was previously published under the scientific name Berberis wilcoxii. It is a shrub native to Arizona, New Mexico, and Sonora. It grows up to 2 meters tall. It has pinnately compound leaves with 5 to 7 leaflets, densely clustered racemes, and ovoid berries that reach up to 10 millimeters in length. It typically grows in rocky canyons located in mountainous areas, at elevations between 1700 and 2500 meters. This species' compound leaves place it in the group that is sometimes treated as the segregate genus Mahonia.
