About Mahonia oiwakensis Hayata

This plant is currently known by the scientific name Mahonia oiwakensis Hayata, and is also referred to as Berberis oiwakensis. It grows as a shrub or tree reaching up to 7 meters in height. Its leaves can grow up to 45 centimeters long, and are compound, bearing 12 to 20 pairs of leaflets plus a larger terminal leaflet. The upper surface of the leaves is dark green, while the lower surface is yellow-green. Its inflorescence is a fascicled raceme that grows up to 25 centimeters long. The plant produces egg-shaped berries that are dark blue, sometimes almost black, and reach up to 8 millimeters in length.
