Madia glomerata Hook. is an annual herb that can sometimes grow over one meter tall. Its stem may be branched or unbranched, and is covered in foliage. The plant has a hairy to bristly texture, is studded with stalked yellow resin glands, and gives off a strong, unpleasant aromatic scent. Its rough-haired leaves reach up to 10 centimeters in length. The inflorescence is typically a cluster of glandular flower heads, which contain yellow disc florets with black tips, and sometimes one or more tiny greenish or purplish yellow ray florets. The fruit produced by this species is a flat black achene that lacks a pappus. This species grows in a wide variety of habitat types, including disturbed areas like roadsides, as well as sagebrush plains and mountains. It is the most widely distributed species in the Madia genus. Its native range spans much of western and northern North America, extending from Alaska down to the Southwestern United States, covering most of southern Canada, and reaching into the Great Lakes region.
