About Macropathus filifer Walker, 1869

Macropathus filifer, first described by Walker in 1869, is a species of jumping wētā. It was originally noted as occurring in caves of the northwest South Island of New Zealand. Aola Richards collected specimens of M. filifer from the area around Wellington and from islands in the Marlborough Sounds. Other researchers have documented this species from Golden Bay in the Tasman Region. Records from the citizen science platform iNaturalist show the species’ range extends through the Tasman and West Coast regions, reaching as far south as Aoraki.
