About Macroglossum passalus Drury, 1773
This species, Macroglossum passalus Drury, 1773, has the following described appearance. On the upperside: the antennae are brown, and are thickest close to their extremities. The head and thorax are greyish brown, with a dark line running down the middle. The abdomen is red brown, with two yellow spots on each side. The tail is broad and hairy. The anterior wings are dark chocolate brown in the third closest to the body; beyond this section they are light red brown, and darken as they approach the tips. The inferior wings are yellow next to the shoulders, with the apical half a fine dark chocolate brown. On the underside: the head is white. The tongue is curled up. The breast and thighs are yellow clay colored. The legs, sides, and abdomen are dark clay colored. The wings are yellow clay colored next to the body, with the remaining parts red brown and a faint darker border along the external edges. The wingspan measures 2 inches (50 mm).
