About Macrodiplax cora (Kaup, 1867)

Description: Adult male Macrodiplax cora are medium-sized dragonflies, reaching around 45 mm in total length with a 75 mm wingspan. Males have a red abdomen marked with black patches on the dorsal side of each segment. Females have abdomens that are less brightly colored than males. The synthorax is brownish and may be covered in fine hairs. The wings are clear, with the exception of a yellowish patch at the base of the hind wing. This species can be easily distinguished from other red-colored dragonflies by its bi-colored legs and the hourglass shape of the black patches on its abdominal segments. Distribution and habitat: This species is migratory and sometimes nomadic, which allows it to have a wide distribution across tropical Asia and Australasia. It can be found in South Asia, Australia, and a range of islands across the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It is somewhat salt-tolerant, and prefers to live in coastal lagoons, estuaries, and swamps.
