This species, the bat hawk (scientific name Macheiramphus alcinus Bonaparte, 1850), is a slender, medium-sized bird of prey that typically reaches around 45 centimeters in length. It has long wings, and takes on a falcon-like silhouette when in flight. Adult bat hawks have dark brown or black plumage, with a white patch covering the throat and chest, and a white streak positioned both above and below each eye. Juvenile bat hawks have mottled brown plumage, and carry more white feathering than adult individuals.
