About Macaria signaria (Hübner)

Macaria signaria, commonly known as the dusky peacock, pale-marked angle, or spruce-fir looper, is a moth species belonging to the family Geometridae. This species was first formally described by Jacob Hübner in 1809. Two subspecies are recognized. The nominate subspecies Semiothisa signaria signaria occurs in Europe, Turkey, the Caucasus, Transcaucasia, the Ural, Siberia, the Russian Far East, Sakhalin, northern Iran, and Japan. The subspecies Macaria signaria dispuncta is distributed across North America, ranging from Yukon and Newfoundland in the north to North Carolina, New Mexico, Arizona, and California in the south. The wingspan of adult Macaria signaria measures 20 to 28 mm. Adults are active in flight from May to July, with the exact timing varying by location. The larvae of this moth feed on Picea abies and Larix sibirica.
