About Macaria loricaria (Eversmann, 1837)

Macaria loricaria, commonly known as the false Bruce spanworm or Eversmann's peacock, is a moth species belonging to the family Geometridae. Its distribution ranges from Fennoscandia and the Baltic states to Sakhalin. It also occurs in North America, where it can be found from Alaska to Newfoundland and New York, extending south to Colorado. Males of this species have a wingspan of 25–29 mm, while females are wingless. In Europe, adult Macaria loricaria are active on the wing from mid-July to August; in North America, adults are active from late June to late July. The larvae feed on Salix species, Betula species, and (in North America) Populus tremuloides. Larvae can be found from May to July, and the species overwinters in the egg stage.
