About Macaria alternata (Denis & Schiffermüller), 1775
Scientific name: Macaria alternata (Denis & Schiffermüller), 1775
Description: This moth has a wingspan ranging from 22–27 mm, or 0.87–1.06 inches. It very closely resembles the related peacock moth Macaria notata, but can usually be distinguished by two key features: a deeper cut along the edge of its forewing, which is the source of its specific name, and a distinctly darker grey band that runs through both of its wings. In some individual specimens, certain identification can only be achieved through examination of the moth's genitalia. This species flies from May to June. The larval stage of this moth feeds on the leaves of sallow, alder, blackthorn, and sea-buckthorn.
