About Lysichiton camtschatcensis (L.) Schott

This herbaceous perennial species is a robust plant that reaches 75 cm (30 inches) in both height and width. It produces glossy, prominently veined leaves that measure 50–100 cm (20–40 inches) in length. In early spring, each individual plant grows a fragrant, pointed white spathe that can be up to 40 cm (16 inches) long, which surrounds a green spadix. Like its close relative Lysichiton americanus, Lysichiton camtschatcensis is grown as a marginal aquatic plant in gardens across Great Britain and Ireland. It has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Hybrids between this species and L. americanus are also cultivated; these hybrids are named Lysichiton × hortensis, and they produce larger spathes than either of the two parent species.
