About Lysandra hispana (Herrich-Schäffer, 1851)
Lysandra hispana, commonly called the Provence chalk-hill blue, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Lycaenidae. This species is found in Spain, southern France, and northern Italy. Its wingspan measures 16–18 mm. It is very similar to Lysandra coridon, but it is paler with a more greyish and duller tone, specifically a greyish pearly-blue or nacreous blue, and has more strongly marked spots along its distal wing margin. Both Lysandra hispana and Lysandra coridon are highly variable species. Adult Lysandra hispana are in flight from April to September, producing two generations per year. This butterfly inhabits dry grasslands growing on chalk or limestone. The larvae of Lysandra hispana feed on horseshoe vetch.
