About Lycianthes rantonnetii (Carrière ex Lesc.) Bitter
Lycianthes rantonnetii is a rounded evergreen shrub with a somewhat loose growth habit, reaching approximately 6 feet (1.8 meters) in both height and width. In summer, it produces a profusion of trumpet-shaped bright blue-purple flowers that have a prominent yellow center; after flowering, it develops red berries. This species is widely cultivated as a garden plant. It can be hardy enough to grow outdoors year-round in mild or coastal regions. In less mild climates, it can be grown in a container and moved under cover for the winter. It requires a sheltered growing position that receives full sun. It has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
