About Lycaena cyna Edwards, 1882

Zizula cyna (scientific name: Lycaena cyna Edwards, 1882, also called the cyna blue) has a wingspan ranging from 16 to 22 mm, which equals 5/8 to 7/8 of an inch. The upper side of its wings is violet blue, while the underside is pale gray and covered in tiny black dots. Adult cyna blues are in flight from March to November each year. The larvae of this species feed on the flower buds of plants in the Acanthaceae family. Adult cyna blues feed on flower nectar. This butterfly is found from southern Texas in the United States, extending south through Mexico and Central America, all the way to Argentina in South America. It typically occurs in subtropical areas and deserts. Stray individuals can be found as far north as northern Texas and Kansas, and as far west as southern Arizona.
