About Lupinus covillei Greene
Lupinus covillei Greene is an erect perennial herb that reaches up to 90 centimeters (35 inches) in height. Its palmate leaves are covered in shaggy hairs, and are composed of multiple leaflets, each of which can grow up to 10 centimeters (3.9 inches) long. All above-ground parts of the plant are coated in long, shaggy hairs. The inflorescence is a raceme holding many flowers, which are sometimes arranged in whorls. Each flower is roughly one centimeter long, blue in color, and has a yellowish spot on its banner petal. The fruit is a woolly legume pod that can grow up to 4 centimeters (1.6 inches) long. Lupinus covillei is endemic to California's Sierra Nevada, where it grows in moist habitats such as wet depressions in meadows. It is also abundant in Sequoia National Park, Yosemite National Park, and Kings Canyon National Park, all within the state of California.
